A TEACHER LIBRARIAN OF THE FUTURE
An effective teacher librarian of the future aspires to meet the Standards of Professional Excellence for Teacher Librarians.(Australian Schools Library Association,2013).
I demonstrate -
Professional Knowledge
Lifelong Learning
Attending professional learning days, taking part in online courses, professional reading, listening to podcasts and watching professional learning videos keeps my professional knowledge current and relevant to the community I serve.
Knowledge of curriculum learning and teaching across curriculum areas and developmental levels.
Current learning and teaching focus, initiatives and strategic plans are the centre of weekly staff meetings and professional learning.
With over 27 years teaching experience I feel I have a good understanding of developmental levels. i teach Pre-Kindergarten - Yr 6 for a total of 6 hours each week.
A rich understanding of the school community and curriculum
Investigation of the new Australian Curriculum,(ACARA, 2011), gave me a good introduction to its online format and core areas of knowledge, understanding, skills and general capabilities. I have a general knowledge of the Key Learning Areas and their content along with the teaching learning resources available through Scootle.
I have spent many years working with the school community and have developed a good understanding of their needs. An even broader view of the community has been established with information found through the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the school's annual report, NAPLAN results, and the local shire council's webpage.
A specialist knowledge of information, resources technology and resource management
I have selected, acquired and managed an accessible and relevant resource collection. I have arranged the print resources to make them accessible to all. E- Resources have been collected and placed on the Primary and Secondary Webpages. The upgrade to the Oliver V5 Library Management System has allowed searching for available resources accessible through any computer anywhere on the Campus.
Professional Practice
A supportive and engaging learning environment has been created with engaging displays, book activities, makerspace events, information posters, reading challenges, author visits and book reviews.
I am available to collaboratively plan with teachers and support the resourcing curriculum programs and integration of ICT. I promote and collaboratively teach Digital Citizenship and the safe, ethical and efficient use of the internet.
Provide exemplary library and information services consistent with national standards
Standards are created to provide inspiration for excellent professional practise and to present goals for which librarians such as myself, can aspire. The standards of a teacher librarian endorsed and promoted by Australian Library and Information Association(ALIA) and ASLA and the standards provided by ALIA itself.
Evaluate student learning and library programs and services to inform professional practise.
Evidence of growth in student learning is gathered through surveys conducted in the Primary. Data of library resource use, nature of the current collection, weeding history and collection are obtained through the Library Management System to inform future practise and justify future expenditure.
Professional Commitment
Model and promote lifelong learning
I model and promote lifelong learning in undertaking professional learning courses, reading professional literature, sharing and collaborating with the wider community and libraries.
Commit to the principles of education and librarianship.
I am committed the principles of education as outlined in National Safe Schools Framework, (Australian Government 2013), and those outlined through ALIA and ASLA. I have enjoyed working with children for over 30 years and continue to do so, passionate about their right to an education that promotes their talents, strengthens their weaknesses and empowers them to become lifelong learners.
Demonstrate leadership within school and professional communities
Study of sustainable strategic leadership, modelling, communication, collaboration, sharing the vision, teamwork and a knowledge of leadership styles and organisations have provided a sound basis to provide effective leadership.
Actively participate in education and library professional networks
My professional network is steadily growing online and through contacts / Professional Learning Days and other.
